The job of radiologic technologists and radiologic technicians is to perform diagnostic imaging examinations such as magnetic resonance imaging, x rays, mammography and magnetic resonance imaging and are usually referred to as radiographers by most people. Their job description may also including producing x ray films which are used for diagnosing medical conditions in the human body. Moreover, they are also required to perform the necessary preparations for radiologic examinations amongst patients. They first of all brief the patient about the entire process, remove any metal object such as jewellery or any other article which may obstruct the passage of x rays during the procedure, and have the patient position himself in such a way that the parts of the body which need to be checked can be radiographed accordingly.
In order to limit exposure to radiation, they are also required to undertake certain precautionary measures such as protecting the surroundings using protective gears and lead shields, and also control the emission of the x ray beam. The radiographic equipment is also positioned at the perfect angle and elevation in order to cover the part of the body which is to be examined. They may also use an instrument which resembles a measuring tape through which they are able to check the thickness of the region which has to undergo the procedure and therefore, prepare for the appropriate settings for the purpose. Radiologic technicans and technologists are also expected to prepare the patients and the necessary equipments for the purpose, and also maintain records and the equipment.
Radiologic Technicians and Technologists are expected to follow the orders given by the physicians’ at all times and also comply with all the rules and regulations in order to protect themselves and the patients from the harmful effects as a result of exposure to radiation. (more…)
